I amsterdam City Card

The I amsterdam City Card is the official city pass of Amsterdam, and the only one that bundles free museum entry with unlimited public transport. One price covers more than 70 museums and attractions, every GVB tram, bus, metro and ferry, one canal cruise, and 24 hours of bike rental. You choose a duration between 24 and 120 hours, and the clock only starts the first time you use it.

What makes the I amsterdam City Card special?

Two things separate the official card from every competitor. First, transport: no other Amsterdam pass includes unlimited GVB travel, which normally costs about EUR 10 per day on its own. Second, breadth: the free list covers the heavyweights, including the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk, NEMO Science Museum, ARTIS Royal Zoo, the Maritime Museum, Moco Museum, the Rembrandt House and A'DAM Lookout, plus dozens of smaller museums most visitors never discover, from the Houseboat Museum to the pipe museum on the Prinsengracht.

What do you actually get with the I amsterdam City Card?

Free entry to the full museum list, with a note of caution: popular houses like the Rijksmuseum require a timeslot booking even with the card, so reserve your slots as soon as your dates are fixed. On top of the museums you get one free canal cruise from several operators around the city, a full day of bike rental, and 25 percent discounts on extras such as the Heineken Experience, the Amsterdam Dungeon and stadium tours at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The card even stretches beyond the city: free entry at the Zaans Museum near the Zaanse Schans windmills, museums in Haarlem, the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, and the ferry between Volendam and Marken.

What is not included?

Be clear about the two famous gaps: the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House are not included, not even at a discount. Both sell timed tickets through their own channels and both sell out, so plan them separately alongside the card. Trains are the other gap: the card covers GVB city transport only, so the airport train and day trips by rail need their own ticket, such as the Amsterdam Travel Ticket for Schiphol or the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket for Zaanse Schans and Keukenhof.

Who should book the I amsterdam City Card?

The math favors museum lovers on a focused city break. Rijksmuseum entry alone is around EUR 22, NEMO about EUR 17, a canal cruise EUR 13 to 20, and a day of trams EUR 10: one busy day can return most of the 48 hour price. Families do well too, since ARTIS, NEMO and the free bikes are built for children. The card is a poor fit if you plan two museums or fewer, if your must sees are exactly the two excluded houses, or if you will walk everywhere in the canal belt and skip the trams.

I amsterdam City Card prices and durations

Prices start from EUR 67 for 24 hours, rising through 48, 72 and 96 hours to the 120 hour card. The sweet spot for most visitors is 72 hours: long enough for six or seven card attractions at a humane pace, short enough that you use it intensively. Remember the validity runs on consecutive hours from first activation, not calendar days, so an afternoon activation stretches your final day.
